A Lesson On Stage Presence!

April 27th, 2009
Connect with your audience! If you’re the singer, chances are you’re fronting your band, or leading your performance if you’re a solo act. Make sure you’re making eye contact and singing directly to specific members of the audience. An easy way to do this is to pick some people close to the front row… sing “to” them… look at them, pretend you’re in love with them, SING to them!

Engaging your audience this way is FANTASTIC for building a following of people to your performances. If you give your audience special attention, they’ll remember you and come back for more.

Dumb It Down!

April 17th, 2009

When you’re singing, it’s natural to try and add a lot of style to your voice. It’s easy to add little note bends and trills at the end of phrases, scoops on high notes, and lots of vibrato. But there’s a fine line between just enough and overkill. A good way to prevent this from happening is to focus on the basics of the song.

Don’t push to hard trying to make it sound completely finished too soon, start by learning the basic beat and melody of the song, become really comfortable with it, and THEN add in your style tricks. If not, you could end up losing the whole feeling of the song… causing it to be buried underneath an unnecessary amount of note bends, trills and fall off notes in unnecessary places. Less is more when it comes to style, for most pieces of music.

Singing Low Notes!

April 12th, 2009

Here’s a tip just for the guys on singing low notes… being a girl myself it’s difficult for me to say whether or not for sure this works, but the technique (regarding breathing) came from a well known classical music teacher in Winnipeg.

He said that for men to hit low notes they should take a deeper breath than they would for singing high notes, so that your whole breathing system is completely supported, even more so than normal.

So the idea is to take a larger breath than normal, and hold it low in your diaphragm to support your frame when you sing the low notes.

I tried this myself to see what effect it had on me and it seemed to work, I was able to hit the A below low C with more ease than normal without being warmed up first.

Does anyone else have any experience with this? I would love to hear if anyone else has tried this and what other techniques you use for singing low notes, how low you can go, etc.

Record Yourself!

April 1st, 2009

Here’s a little tip to get you really well prepared to sing in front of people…record yourself! You can use your computer’s webcam and microphone, an old-school style stereo and *giggle* cassette tapes, or whatever kind of recording equipment you have. (There are lots of software programs that’ll do it for you too)

You’ll hear things in your voice that you didn’t know were there before, and if you find something you don’t like, you can hear it and fix it BEFORE you go onstage.  This way you’re guarantees to sing your song in a way that you know for sure you’re comfortable with.

Vowel Shaping!

March 18th, 2009

Here’s a quick tip on vowel shaping… kind of goes with articulating. When singing, your notes will come out sounding more polished if you shape your vowels a little. Vowel shaping is DIFFERENT from vowel bending by the way; vowel bending is a technique classical teachers use to hit high notes without tension.

Here are the basics of what I like to do. For lower notes, I shape my vowels into the “o” vowel sound. Here’s an example. When we sing the word love, it comes out sounding like “luv.” To shape this vowel, I emphasize the O sound and actually sing “love” with a strong O sound instead of the U sound.

For higher pitches, I do the opposite. Easiest way to do it is to shape your mouth into a smile. However, you may not want to do the opposite on high notes. Different techniques work for different people, so you may want to keep shaping your vowels into the O sound for high notes too. Classical singers are often taught to do this and nothing else. I say try both ways and do what works best for you.

Play What You Practice!

March 12th, 2009

Hello singers,

This may seem like an obvious practice tip but it’s important to follow… and sometimes people forget about it. The tip is to make sure that you’re practicing a song in the same fashion that you’re going to perform it in.

Singers can often get sidetracked practicing a song to certain music, or singing it with specific trills and techniques, then when it comes time to perform it they sing it completely differently! I think it’s definitely important to try new things and ways of singing songs, but while you’re practicing is the time to do that… not while you’re performing. Then, perform what you practice.

Thoughts?

A Tip On Warming Up For A Performance!

February 28th, 2009

Here’s a great warm up tip for when you’re about to perform!  Shortly before you go onstage, find a quiet place where you can be alone, and do some deep breathing exercises. Practice the proper breathing posture and breathe in slowly ten times. Then, practice a simple five tone scale for a few minutes, starting at the bottom of your range going all the way up to the top, then back down to the bottom using any of the vowel sounds, A, E, I, O, or U.

Then, sing the first verse and maybe the chorus of each song in your set that you’re about to sing.  This helps to get them fresh in your head and get you mentally prepared to sing them! If you have band mates or other people that you have to sing with, get them to do it with you so it simulates the actual performance.

My band played a great show on the road last night and when I was warming up, one of my band mates came and started singing the songs with me in the back room… I felt MUCH more relaxed and calm going onstage as a result!
